Imvelo Safari Lodges - Zimbabwe

In 1994, the founders of Imvelo had a vision – with their shared passion of the African Bush, its native wildlife, and people, they wanted to create a destination that not only provided visitors to Zimbabwe with a unique and unforgettable safari experience, but also a destination that provided assistance and support to local communities.

At one time, indigenous rural communities received very little direct benefit from Zimbabwe’s booming tourism industry. For the majority of locals, tourists were nothing but camera-clad foreigners that drove around national parks in 4x4s. And as for ‘conservation’: a rich man’s joke! For the rural villager, wildlife was by no means an attraction; elephants ate their crops and lions killed their livestock.

The animals were problematic and not something to encourage. The hope was – that by building safari attractions and infrastructures within communal areas – a symbiotic relationship between holidaymakers and locals could grow.

This would, in turn, enable them to protect and preserve local wildlife, whilst imparting self-sustaining and lifelong methods of survival to the communities, and so Imvelo Safari Lodges was born. We currently have 2 lodges in our portfolio – Gorges Lodge in Victoria Falls, built on the edge of the Batoka Gorge, some 250 metres above the mighty Zambezi River and Bomani Tented Lodge, set in our 5000 acre private reserve on the edge of Hwange National Park. Our third lodge, Camelthorn, also in Hwange National Park, is currently under construction and is set to open early next year.
