Robin Pope Safaris - Malawi
Zambia offers one the opportunity to truly experience the "Tawny
Continent" in comfort and style but without loosing "Africa of
Yesteryear". It forms the perfect safari destination. The Wilderness
awaits your arrival and here Robin and Jo Pope made their home for
nearly 30 years. Robin Pope Safaris is one of the oldest safari
companies in Zambia, known throughout the world for running safaris that
have remained true to the original style - safaris with heart and
simplicity.
On safari you will be invited to explore the South Luangwa National Park both by vehicle and on foot. And at night, the drives continue and the behaviour of nocturnal species is observed. Robin Pope is globally known for Walking Safari`s, be it a five day walk or morning walk from one of the camps. Robin Pope Safaris have three intimate safari camps - Nkwali being the home camp, Tena Tena and Nsefu - all on the banks of the South Luangwa River and with sweeping views.
The camps are comfortable, natural and understated, and all very different in style. Each camp is located next to a water hole, that attracts game throughout the day. In addition, a mobile camp supports the RPS Walking Safaris. Nkwali, RPS permanent home, overlooks the park. The surrounding land has open grassland and quiet ebony groves where giraffe and elephant are often seen. It is the ideal place to start you Luangwa safari, being only 45 minutes from the airport.
The six guest rooms are made of woven bamboo and thatch, with open air bathrooms. Access into the park is by pontoon and boat. Nkwali has the added luxury of a swimming pool open for guests with changing rooms and showers. Nsefu, located within the South Luangwa National Park, was the first safari camp in Zambia and opened in 1952. This is where Robin Pope made his name in the early eighties. In 1999 the camp was restored in original style and Nsefu is now a glorious place to stay; as one guest said, it has "understated elegance".
The six rondavels are stylish. Tena Tena which has been described in The Times, London as "altogether beyond superlatives and must be one of the best safari camps in the whole of Africa. It is a tented camp, inside the National Park, with 8-10 beds. Each large, airy tent opens up onto a private veranda that looks out onto the bush. Woven bamboo "dressing rooms" separate the tents from their open-air bathrooms. Cultural activities add to the overall safari experience and you can book a trip to Kawaza Village - a unique chance for up to 12 guests at a time to experience African village life. Guests can spend one or two nights or just a day joining in with the villagers daily activities. This is independantly run although Robin Pope Safaris take all the international bookings. The Walking Mobile Safaris follow a major tributary of the Luangwa. 5 days spent walking in the north of the South Park following the Mupamadzi River and staying in a mobile tented camp.
The top guides of RPS guide these safaris and for availability please see our web site on www.robinpopesafaris.net. In 2008 RPS opened the luxurious Pumulani on the shores of Lake Malawi. With 10 very spacious villas scattered along the hillside the views of the lake are spectacular. The water sports available include water skiing, diving and snorkeling, sailing and kayaking. The mountain bikes provide some land exploration and village visits, walking in the hills and bird watching are also popular with the guests. Pumulani makes for a great beach addition to the bush safari in Zambia. Robin Pope Safaris provide services in the following countries: Zambia and Malawi Availability is on our website.
