Pilli Pipa Dhow Safari - Kenya

If you fancy a change of scenery instead of lazing on the beach, the Pilli Pipa Dhow Safari may be just the experience you need. See what Kisite Marine Park has to offer. Situated towards the southern end of Kenya’s coastal strip, Kisite’s extensive reef system is home to dolphins, turtles, over 350 species of vibrantly coloured tropical fish and an exciting variety of coral life. No doubt you have heard all about the well publicised dolphins that have inhabited the area in and around the Kisite Marine Park for as long as local people can remember.

Almost everybody visiting the park will see dolphins but what about the other interesting creatures that contribute to the eco-system there? Lately, divers and snorkellers have been observing an unprecedented number of whale sharks between 6 to 8 metres in length. Humpback Whales are also spotted between July and September: unforgettable experiences! Nudibranchia, (sea slugs), are given little importance by the average snorkeller or diver.

They have various shades of purple, red, blue, green and yellow, a warning to predators that they are noxious or even toxic; their colour also helps them hide themselves by use of camouflage. Chemical warfare is the weapon of choice for many; some secrete acids which produce a sensation found to be distasteful by fish. Others secrete toxins so powerful that a nudibranch placed in a bucket with fish or crabs will kill them in about an hour! They are also hermaphroditic – that is having both male and female reproductive organs present in adult specimens.

A day spent on the Pill Pipa Dhow excursion, whether diving or snorkelling, will be a day that comes alive with new experiences. Our crew are very knowledgeable about marine life and trained to assist weak swimmers. We have buoyancy jackets for less confident swimmers, silicone masks for better fit and prescription lens ranging from -3 to -7 available on request. We have twin-valve snorkels with comfit mouthpieces for easier snorkelling. Facilities on the dhow include inboard W.C., depth finder, sun cover, tea, coffee, fruit and snacks. We limit numbers for added safety and more individual service.

Even non-swimmers have had a go snorkelling with us! The day is rounded off with one of the most sumptuous seafood meals you could ever imagine served in our garden on Wasini Island by smiling Swahili ladies. Wine, beer and soft drinks are included. Some days you will meet Selina, our resident marine biologist. Sail back to Shimoni Jetty where you may visit the famous Shimoni Cave, an interesting part of Kenya’s history. Then it’s back to your hotel in the late afternoon.
