Great Plains Conservation - South Africa

The founding partners of Great Plains Dereck & Beverly Joubert, Mark Read, and Paul Harris have come together with one main goal – to create iconic, role model, sustainable conservation projects. These passionate conservationists in their 50's pooled their wide ranging skills and experience to create innovative, world-class conservation projects in a number of diverse and threatened habitats throughout Africa, the Indian Ocean and eventually in India.

The world's citizens must make a choice - "where to from here?".  We believe there can only be one goal - saving some of the last great, iconic, and wild places of the world. This is the mission: to find the right formula between conservation, communities and commerce. Great Plains Conservation's model takes stressed and threatened environments, surrounds them with compassionate protection and intelligent management.

National Geographic Society have recognised the common ethos between their own work throughout the world and that of Great Plains Conservation and have become an investor into Great Plains, with the Joubert's launching the National Geographic Big Cat Initiative.

Gibb's Farm - Tanzania

Gibb's Farm is a working Farm located on the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It comprises a warm and friendly community where the rhythm of Farm Life has calmed and restored the weary safari journeyer for over 40 years.

View of Gibbs Farm Gibb’s Farm hugs nearly a mile of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, part of a 3,200 square mile reserve. Ideally located, the Farm lies half way between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, near the village of Karatu. Set among formal English gardens, the Farmhouse and 20 ensuite cottages are the heart of a working farm. Built in 1929, the Farmhouse has hardly changed, retaining the charm of a well looked-after private house. Cozy living rooms and reading corners are just steps away from the dining room, bar and gift shop.

Fireplaces fill the Farmhouse with warmth and historical charm. Just outside, a sprawling verandah and floral garden invite sweeping views of the valley below the Farm. Organic Coffee is grown, processed and roasted on the Farm, and a vast 10-acre organic fruit and vegetable garden provides 90% of the ingredients needed for fresh, home-cooked meals. Gibb’s Farm provides a welcome stay on any safari, and a base from which to enjoy the many activities available in the foothills of the Ngorongoro Forest, The Ngorongoro Crater and Manyara National Park. Even if your stay is short, find time for a gentle walk or a tour of our gardens.

The accommodation consists of 8 seaview cottages and 9 deluxe beachfront cottages.

The FAR fully integrated response system is made up of: - 24 hour manned operations centres with personnel trained to co-ordinate responses in Tanzania. - Internationally trained professional medical response teams certified by UK National Health Service Trusts. - Road and custom designed 4WD ambulances. - Fixed winged and helicopter air ambulances.

All equipped with advanced life support equipment including defibrillators, ECG, trauma kits, resucitation equipment, vacuum and scoop stretchers, 7.5 hour oxygen cylinders and life saving drugs. The service is initiated by one telephone call to our emergency lines and an evacuation is carried out through to admission and the first 24 hours charges at the hospital nominated by the patient or next of kin in Dar es Salaam, Nairobi or Mombassa.

FAR is designed to fill the gaps not filled by existing medical insurers and assistance companies by having the personnel and equipment on the ground in country trained and ready 24 hours a day 365 days a year. FAR is operated by Knight Support who have been offering people in East Africa effective solutions to their medical and other problems since 1999. Things on safari don't always go as planned - that's part of the adventure.

But wherever you are in Tanzania or Kenya, First Air Responder can get to you with professional pre-medical attention and bring you back safely with the first custom designed medical air evacuation and advanced life support ambulance. Make sure you are a member of First Air Responder and 'hakuna matata'.

Finch Hattons Lodge - Kenya

If one name is synonymous with luxury in the African bush it must surely be that of Denys Finch Hatton. Befriended by Kings, immortalised by Hollywood, Finch Hatton`s courage and charm inspired a whole generation of safari guides - while his hot showers and fine wines became the hallmarks of the modern camping safari.

Today Finch Hatton`s name lives on in a remote corner of Tsavo, where his example has inspired what is arguably the most luxurious camp in Africa. Set on the shores of wildlife-rich volcanic springs, Finch Hattons offers a rare blend of old Africa and modern luxury against the majestic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Deluxe en suite tents and the finest cordon bleu cuisine provide the ultimate `bush luxury`, whilst the outside terraces offer dining with an orchestra of natures finest virtuosos.
